Understanding the Different Types of Access Control Systems

Access control systems are electronic systems designed to be controlled by a network and have network access. The primary purpose of access control systems is to authenticate, recognise, and allow access to the permitted person into a restricted area.

With access control systems, the security of a sensitive area can be ensured. The network is an essential part of an access control system. For instance, when a door is unlocked with a swipe card, it runs on an access control system.

What is an Access Control System?

Access control is an electronic system that provides security so only an authorised person can enter a premises. It is one of the most common systems used in electronic doors for protection.

These electronic doors use cards or magnetic stripes, which can be swiped through the reader device in the door to allow entrance. Different organisations use different types of access control systems depending on the required level of security.

The most commonly used access control systems are biometric, RFID, door controls, and card readers. Access points can be controlled individually by the organisations where high security is required. Those companies that handle sensitive data need network security too. Some companies also use physical locks along with access control systems to increase the security of the door or gates.

Below we will discuss some common types of access control systems.

Biometric Access Control Systems

Biometric access control systems are access control systems that use fingerprints to allow entrance to people. It also records the employees’ attendance and keeps track of the number of people visited in the area via access software. Areas that require high-security use this system a lot because of its secure and easy-to-install features.

Fingerprints are used in biometric systems instead of access cards or key fobs. These access control systems give active users access and keep track of people who entered the building. Most companies also integrate the Attendance Software with these systems to get authentic data on employees’ attendance, thus saving time and resources. It also increases the productivity and profitability of an organisation.

Proximity Access Control Systems

Proximity access control systems are more secure access control systems. It enables organisations to have more security on their doors. These systems are widely used in offices, factories, banks, and many more.

Door Access Control Systems

Door access control systems are a compact, standalone, and low-cost door opening/closing system. You can install this device easily and can use it instantly after installing it. They are widely used in places like offices, server rooms, airports, defense, and data centers.

Door access control systems can be linked or can be standardized depending on the level of security required for an organisation. The most suitable locations for such access control systems are homes and offices. A central control location manages these. A door access control system comprises a magnetic door lock,  electronic door locks, a control panel, and power supplies. Access is granted to an individual as per data put in the administration software. The key opens all the doors of a building for the individuals with access cards. Every user has their own card, and a unique id is given to each of these cards.

Here are some benefits of a door access control system:

  • It offers maximum security.
  • It doesn’t require any maintenance.
  • The authentication process is fast and efficient.
  • You can reduce administration costs by using these.
  • It has optional features which make it customisable.

The most common type of door access control system is a key card entrance system. A key card is a plastic card that is linked with the access control lock system. Moreover, it has fewer components as compared to other access control systems.

Here are some benefits of a smart card reader:

  • It has a compact design.
  • The storage capacity is up to 50000 punches.
  • It has up to 99 terminal networking.
  • The In/Out setting is programmable.
  • You can store up to 10,000 employees’ information along with their names.
  • There is a 16×4 LCD that shows the employee’s name, date, time, and card number.
  • It comes with the feature of a switch-mode power supply.
  • You can connect it through Rs232, Rs484, TCP/IP, and Modems.
  • Data can be transferred online.
  • It enables communication through voice messaging.

Security Access Control Systems

Security access control systems have many applications. They can be customised to meet individual and family security requirements. They can be coveted to burglar alarm systems, fire and carbon monoxide detection systems, closed-circuit TV video systems, card access, and automation systems.

A central control system is connected with multiple sensors placed across the house. When the sensors detect anything, the central control system triggers an alarm, auto-dial from the telephone or connects to the internet for monitoring.

There are two types of security access control systems, monitor and non-monitored. However, the purpose of both these systems is to trigger a loud alarm in case the sensors detect anything.

A monitored system is connected with a 24-hour surveillance system that detects the signal when an intruder tries to enter your property. It calls the homeowner within seconds and asks for the name and passcode of the person who receives the call. Whereas, in non-monitored systems, whenever an intrusion is detected, it automatically calls the local police.

A wired security system is connected with tiny low-voltage wires. It has a wireless radio transmitter that sends radio signals to the central control unit. These control units have their own batteries, which are recharged when there is power available. The purpose of these batteries is to keep the system online even when the wires are cut, or there is no power.
